Living with Dachshunds

Dachshunds in Their Natural Habitat
I  sometimes feel like I am the curator of a Zoo. A special Zoo, only inhabited by weenie dogs.
Newman explores the perimeter.
Poor...Sally.. she has cherry eye in both eyes now. Surgery required. Darn it.
Violet doing what Violet does....being pretty. Her hair is curly because she just had a bath.
Newman's hot on the trail.
I smell something!!!!
Nope...just a sneeze.
Sillly Sally...she only likes to be outside if I am outside.
Harvey stays in the shade on the deck. Smart puppy.
Zoning in.....
Now an itch....darn allergies!
Newman eats his prey. Which might be dirt...or it might be a worm....I don't know.
Violet still being pretty.
And Harvey never leaves the deck. Like a lion overseeing his pride.
See how terribly long his nails are? That is because he tries to walk as little as possible
and I have to sneak up on him while he is sleeping to cut one nail at a time...
and even that is nearly impossible.
But when I try to trim them...he acts like he is going to have a heart attack.
It's really a terrible situation.

Have a great weekend! I'll be here with the weenies!

It's funny that folks who don't have dachshunds always turn their noses up when you mention yours. They're evidently yappy, possessive, and sometimes mean.... Well, mine have all had the most unique personalities and have brought so much joy to my life. My current one, Famous, who I have nicknamed "The Hound" is just like your Violet outside. Ears blowing in the breeze, enjoying the day, being beautiful. Have a lovely weekend!

Same with our dog. One nail and then take a break. I have special treats that he gets after the nail gets cut so that helps. He does get 2 walks a day that helps keep them trimmed. Lovely photos.

Your Dachshunds are so precious, I must say Harvey is my favorite, he is a little plump though! He is living the good life! What would we do without pets?

They are all so cute. Short like me. I am able to trim our little dogs nails cause she is so food motivated. Feed, clip, feed, clip. She focuses on her treats but this won't work in most dogs probably.

Your dachshunds are adorable! Ours is named Molly, she is 14 years old. I love the silly stories you tell about yours!

Molly does not like to have her nails cut either and there is no sneaking up on her. One time they got so long my husband had to use a nail file on the before we could even cut them! I had the job of holding her down, it was very traumatic for us all :(

I can't believe you did this post on today of all days! We have a rescued Dachshund here at the clinic. She was abandoned at the shelter and had an awful bladder infection. We found out that she had "stones" so we did surgery yesterday and took out one as big as an egg. We are trying to find her a home right now.....I hope someone adopts her very soon or...I mean, er, well...I might have to take her home!

Such a fun post Nita!! I loved to see the kids in action around the yard and the deck. I just did a similar post while showing them following me around while I gardened. You know, growing up I had a weenie dog named Snoopy even though she was a girl. She lived a very long time and was almost as big as Harvey in the end!!

What is up with blogger lately, your follow button keeps disappearing on me. I'll try gain tomorrow.

How do you handle so many weenies? They are so funny with their little short legs.

They are so cute.. like little garden elves! Violet is so beautiful. Poor Harvey.. I clipped my golden's nails too short once and have to resort taking her to get them cut. She's too wiggly and I've lost my confidence. Have a good weekend!

Oh wow, they are soooo cute!! I love them all. I especially love Harvey!! He looks like a love bug. I can relate to you - I have a kitty who doesn't like his nails trimmed either. I have to do the same thing - a few nails at a time when Archie is half-asleep.

Your little ones are just adorable. Thank you for sharing. :)

So so very cute the weenies are looking! Hope you have a great weekend!!! :) P.S. I still can't help but talk like Mr. Weenie from "Open Season" whenever I see a weenie dog...you know...the German accent??? You simply must see him for a real giggle! ;D

Hi Nita, Loved the pics. I always enjoy updates on all your doxies as I am a doxie mom myself. My daughter usually cuts the nails for Millie by laying her on her side. Now when she sees the trimmers she just rolls over and lays there! Anything for a treat bone. LOL

Nita, I loved this post about your sweet companions. We have several Dachshund mixes and they never cease to delight us. They are all rescues and we adore them all. Harvey: I would like to see you get just a bit more exercise and trim down just a tad, for health reasons. LOL! But I am certain he has a mind of his own! Have a marvelous weekend.

I grew up with dachshunds, they are wonderful loyal dogs. Our first one, Shultz, lived 21 years, then we had Mitzy and finally the twins Ellie and Evie. Seeing yours makes me so tempted to get one more!

Hi loving your blog, but saw the pic of your large pooch Harvey. It is really not healthy for him to be so overweight! Have you ever considered smaller portions of food and regular walks? There are many people who specialize in pet diet and health. In the end it will only be causing him discomfort and health issues.
