Let's Think Thanksgiving!

Savor It
Now that Halloween is out of the way...I'm really in a fall mood.
But now everyone else seems to be clamoring for Christmas.
This gives me a tight feeling in my throat.
I want to savor fall and Thanksgiving stuff.
I love Thanksgiving and the calm decor that goes along with it.
I know I could enjoy it all during October...but in October...I'm all about the fun of Halloween
and it's too hot here in September to think really about anything fall.
Isn't that the sweetest image?
By the way...I repainted my chalkboard that I'd bought and couldn't write on with chalk.
I painted it with chalkboard paint and now it's good to go.
It will be making an appearance here soon.
I'm sure I've shown that image above before but I love that cornucopia.
I wonder where they got it? I've never seen one like it.
I'd really love to have one.
This is where I'd like to have my Thanksgiving dinner...
a little cottage in the woods.

Isn't it precious?

STOP THE MADNESS

Talking about Thanksgiving. I signed this petition this morning asking Target to not open their
doors on Thanksgiving evening so their employees can enjoy the day with their families.

As you know...if you've read my blog for long...I worked Thanksgiving night
at Target a couple of years ago.

I had to leave my Thanksgiving dinner early while everyone was still having fun.

I actually thought it would be a merry experience but no...customers were rude, hateful and in a hurry.

They were mostly people buying electronics to resell.

The nice shoppers came at like 7 am.

The ones at midnight were horrid.

The store was super busy for two hours and then totally dead till the real shoppers came the next morning.

The public thinks that people working that day are those that choose to because they have nothing else to do.

This is not true. Everyone is required to work.

I just think this needs to stop.

I will never ever shop Target on that day but then actually...I don't shop that day or that whole weekend.

I don't want to fight crowds that are blood thirsty for the best deals.
There is nothing I need or want that badly.

So...I'm thinking there are probably a lot of like minded readers out there so may
I suggest signing the petition below written by a Target employee.
Much of her family works there and they can't even have a Thanksgiving because of the big
Thanksgiving sales.

She'd just like to have the same holiday as the rest of the country.

Can you help her get her message out there?
STOP THE MADNESS

Retail is ridiculous. Signing:)

I rarely shop in stores at all anymore. Mostly just for groceries like fresh fruit and dairy. I probably won't go into a store between Thanksgiving and Xmas. That's my usual schedule. And I'll sign it.

Signed it!
I never ever go shopping on Thanksgiving, anywhere! If we forgot something, then TOO bad!
and the day after Thanksgiving I'm super busy at work so I can't go then even if I wanted to, which I don't because I HATE crowds.
I love all the images! Especially the first one! Adore it.
I love the cottage too.

Nita,
Unfortunately, I have a different opinion.
As a nurse who has worked Full Time night shift for 30 years, I do not EVER get a full Holiday off. It is the policy of the huge Health system that I work for that night shift either works the Eve or the Day of our 6 paid Holidays. So I NEVER get an entire Holiday off. I either have to work the Eve(night) of the Holiday and then be off the day (Night) or vice versa. And for 27 years, I have had EVERY holiday dinner here for my immediate family and we just have dinner around when I am working and yes, I do ALL the cooking and I have survived.
My attitude is you gotta do what you gotta do.
By the way, my son and daughter in love both have worked for Target for 13 + years and welcome the chance to work the holiday and get paid time and a half. Yes, they will be working as they work the overnight shift and have worked on Thanksgiving before even when the store was not open for Thanksgiving.
Sorry but I will not be signing the petition...
No hard feelings I hope....

Hugs,
Deb

No...no hard feelings but you get paid well for being a nurse. Most Target employees are not paid well. Many are doing it as a second job. I think that is the difference. I've been a graphic designer for 30 years...and I know that involves working many nights and weekends...that is just the job. But I don't think people that are being paid minimum wage and working on top of another job should be expected to give up Thanksgiving. If it was a volunteer basis...work the day if you want...good. But...it is not...everyone must work. And the people shopping are not nice.

We have Target here in Winnipeg now, I don't know if it was open on Thanksgiving this year or not. It is not a good idea, anyway, I totally agree with you.
I will never understand rude people!
I have enjoyed seeing all of your Thanksgiving images.
Ours is celebrated in October and it's a good idea, I think. We probably only have one more week and the snow will be flying every other day or so until March.
Have a good weekend, my friend! And I hope you got your painting done, I look forward to seeing it.

I'm with you. I want to enjoy fall until Thanksgiving. I've never thought of it Thanksgiving decorations being "calm" but you are right. They are calm. I never shop after Thanksgiving either. Just don't want to be part of any of that mess. It's just a bunch of people buying things for themselves.

Retail now is so different than it was when I worked at Brooks. Back then (early 80s) it was a big deal just for the mall to be open an hour later the two weeks before Christmas. Sure, many careers demand hours other than 9 to 5, but working on a holiday in a non-essential place of business will never sit right with me. This is an unusual holiday season though, isn't it, with Thanksgiving coming so late in the month. It will actually be First Monday in Canton and I'm sure they will be mobbed on the 28th. I really respected LaurieAnna last year when she chose to close on Easter Sunday even though it was First Monday weekend, so her employees could worship and be with their families. Imagine deciding to close your business for 25% of the month's hours -- they are only open 4 days a month. Oh well I guess you can't please everyone but I'm with you, let's save the shopping for Black Friday!! Let the people who aren't saving lives for a living spend it with their families, God knows they will be working plenty for the next 4 weeks in retail anyway. That's just my 2 cents :)

I signed it and totally agree.
Working in retail is different than the medical field. Some jobs are essential. Buying a toy can wait.
My husband has to work on Friday. Most businesses (other than shopping) are closed on Fridays.
I won't shop on Friday. I try my best to avoid any stores between the two holidays.
I am waiting on the cute owl pillow from Pier one to go on sale. It is in the front of the checkout at our store for $25. It is so soft and cute. It is $25 right now. If you see it go on sale could you send me an email. It is for a special little friend. Thanks.

One of the things that I don't like about blogging is that many bloggers seem to rush or "force" the seasons and holidays....like decorating for autumn at the end of August when it's still hot, and there's still another month left in summer.

I like to live in the moment and enjoy each season. I don't decorate for Christmas until after Thanksgiving!

I have never once in my life shopped on Black Friday, and I certainly won't shop on Thanksgiving. UGH! I will sign the petition!

I hate to even get out the day after Thanksgiving, my kids have to drag me. Definitely wouldn't be out Thanksgiving night! I signed, and I agree, I love the calm that surrounds this time of year.

You're preaching to the choir! That's why our family celebrates holidays weeks after the actual holiday. When a family member works for a large retail company, we work around their schedule. I'm just thankful that we're able to get our entire family together even if it's not actually ON the holiday.

I just signed and sent it to all my friends and family members.

I love to see my family around the table, enjoying the meal and then lingering over dessert and coffee, telling and re-telling stories. These are the memories that keep families together...The "bargains" will soon be forgotten.

I already followed your link and signed the petition. I am not sure they actually sell anymore by being open on Thanksgiving. People just spend their money earlier. I hate all the crazy shoppers hoarding electronics and pushing and shoving to buy them a day early.
Love all your Thanksgiving pictures and I want to move into that cottage too.

I love your inspiration pictures. I too am ready for fall: I won't decorate for Christmas before Advent.

I signed. I also worked retail for a lot of years back in the late 80's--early 90's. We opened "early" on Black Friday (at 8 a.m.!), and the shoppers were pleasant and fun. Black Friday today is a nightmare--the fact that people get injured, and even killed, SHOPPING is insane! I never thought I would see the day that non-essential businesses would open on holidays like Thanksgiving . . . it's a sad sign of our times.
I am so with you on the decorating schedule! November is fall-time to me. My Christmas decorations go up the day after Thanksgiving. I love the richness and coziness of Thanksgiving decorations.

I just signed the petition and shared it on facebook. There is not reason retail stores need to be open on Thanksgiving. These early bird sales just make people crazy. I feel badly for those that have to give up their holidays and family time for these sales.

Signing and posting. I have never shopped that weekend. It is family time to me, not time to go into a buying frenzy when you really are not saving any money, only getting aggravated. This year will be a quiet one more than usual for us since I am having a hysterectomy two days before Thanksgiving. I will be putting my feet up and enjoying some healing time.
When I was younger and worked retail the stores were not even open on Sunday, much less on a holiday. We need to get back to the days when real life was more important then rampant consumerism.
Thanks for sharing this Nita.

I have to give a lot of credit to my hubby for keeping his store closed on the holiday. It is a horrible trend that has started and I hope it does not last. Kit

I agree with you about thanksgiving/November. I really want to enjoy this time. I "do" winter after thanksgiving, which still leaves about a month for those holidays. let's enjoy this time!

I'm signing because I object to the commercialization of every holiday. I think stores being open is a bad thing for our country. Thanksgiving Day is an important part of our culture and our heritage. Celebrating Thanksgiving reminds us to stop and consider our individual blessings and our nation. Thanksgiving is a chance for everyone of us to connect on a basis level. I believe in building our national pride and sense of unity. I don't like how every holiday is about the selling season not the actual holiday - Look at Christmas! Christmas is Advent, Christmastide - the 12 days of Christmas ending on the feast of Epiphany, - and yet do you'd hear a carol or see a decoration after Christmas Eve. As far as the workers go - I think it stinks to have to work retail on a holiday but I kinda agree with Debbie -Dabble some times you gotta do what you gotta do. I just don't think department stores turning another national holiday into a sales frenzy is something we gotta do. - Getting off my soap box now! Lovely post Nita! Nice to hear what people are thinking and to know what they care about! Have a BLESSED Thanksgiving one and all!
