I think stores being open is a bad thing for our country. Thanksgiving Day is an important part of our culture and our heritage. Celebrating Thanksgiving reminds us to stop and consider our individual blessings and our nation. Thanksgiving is a chance for everyone of us to connect on a basis level. I believe in building our national pride and sense of unity. I don't like how every holiday is about the selling season not the actual holiday - Look at Christmas! Christmas is Advent, Christmastide - the 12 days of Christmas ending on the feast of Epiphany, - and yet do you'd hear a carol or see a decoration after Christmas Eve. As far as the workers go - I think it stinks to have to work retail on a holiday but I kinda agree with Debbie -Dabble some times you gotta do what you gotta do. I just don't think department stores turning another national holiday into a sales frenzy is something we gotta do. - Getting off my soap box now! Lovely post Nita! Nice to hear what people are thinking and to know what they care about! It is family time to me, not time to go into a buying frenzy when you really are not saving any money, only getting aggravated. This year will be a quiet one more than usual for us since I am having a hysterectomy two days before Thanksgiving. I will be putting my feet up and enjoying some healing time.
When I was younger and worked retail the stores were not even open on Sunday, much less on a holiday. We opened "early" on Black Friday (at 8 a.m.!), and the shoppers were pleasant and fun. Black Friday today is a nightmare--the fact that people get injured, and even killed, SHOPPING is insane! I never thought I would see the day that non-essential businesses would open on holidays like Thanksgiving . . . it's a sad sign of our times.
I am so with you on the decorating schedule! Back then (early 80s) it was a big deal just for the mall to be open an hour later the two weeks before Christmas. Sure, many careers demand hours other than 9 to 5, but working on a holiday in a non-essential place of business will never sit right with me. This is an unusual holiday season though, isn't it, with Thanksgiving coming so late in the month. It will actually be First Monday in Canton and I'm sure they will be mobbed on the 28th. I really respected LaurieAnna last year when she chose to close on Easter Sunday even though it was First Monday weekend, so her employees could worship and be with their families. Imagine deciding to close your business for 25% of the month's hours -- they are only open 4 days a month. Oh well I guess you can't please everyone but I'm with you, let's save the shopping for Black Friday!! Let the people who aren't saving lives for a living spend it with their families, God knows they will be working plenty for the next 4 weeks in retail anyway. That's just my 2 cents :) Andrea at Opulent Cottagehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00047846276519608281noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1518721847478228439.post-89564293437666202442013-11-02T16:50:54.999-05:002013-11-02T16:50:54.999-05:00I'm with you. Most Target employees are not paid well. Many are doing it as a second job. I think that is the difference. I've been a graphic designer for 30 years...and I know that involves working many nights and weekends...that is just the job. But I don't think people that are being paid minimum wage and working on top of another job should be expected to give up Thanksgiving. If it was a volunteer basis...work the day if you want...good. But...it is not...everyone must work. And the people shopping are not nice. Unfortunately, I have a different opinion.
...Nita,
Unfortunately, I have a different opinion.
As a nurse who has worked Full Time night shift for 30 years, I do not EVER get a full Holiday off. It is the policy of the huge Health system that I work for that night shift either works the Eve or the Day of our 6 paid Holidays. So I NEVER get an entire Holiday off. I either have to work the Eve(night) of the Holiday and then be off the day (Night) or vice versa. And for 27 years, I have had EVERY holiday dinner here for my immediate family and we just have dinner around when I am working and yes, I do ALL the cooking and I have survived.
My attitude is you gotta do what you gotta do.
By the way, my son and daughter in love both have worked for Target for 13 + years and welcome the chance to work the holiday and get paid time and a half. Yes, they will be working as they work the overnight shift and have worked on Thanksgiving before even when the store was not open for Thanksgiving.
Sorry but I will not be signing the petition...
No hard feelings I hope....

Hugs,
DebDebbie-Dabble Blog and A Debbie-Dabble Christmashttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09393980831584145593noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1518721847478228439.post-80243098630325861832013-11-02T15:41:03.663-05:002013-11-02T15:41:03.663-05:00I agree with you!! this is madness..
