A Winter's Mantel

I was so slow in getting a new display up on the mantel after Christmas.
I loved my Christmas Mantel and wasn't anxious to take it down.
And since it was all trees and snow...I thought it ok to leave it a little while.
See it here.
But last week I decided enough was enough...and down it had to come.
I really had no idea what I was going to put up.
But then I remembered I'd recently been given a few more silver things...and I decided silver
was a good theme.
I kept out a couple of glitter snowflakes.
The silver coffee pot was a Christmas gift from my sister.
She knows to pick up anything silver for me at the flea market.
When she called to tell me she'd found me something.
I told her..."You shouldn't be buying me anything. I don't need a thing."
"But...but..", she said, "It's a silver coffee pot!"
"Oh", I said "In that case, yes I need it and I'm so glad you bought it for me!"
After Christmas my friend Petra was doing a big clean out of her kitchen.
You know getting into those bottom cupboards that stuff just gets shoved into?
She had bags and bags of things going to Goodwill.
But she had a few things set aside that she knew I'd want.
That included two silver trays.
Yes, please!
The frame I painted awhile ago but I don't like the color. I'll be repainting it.
But the color works well in  this arrangement.
At Christmas I had icicles hanging from my scones and loved how they made the sconces appear larger.
Don't know why I didn't do this before...but I dug some old crystal garland and prisms out
and dressed my 1930 sconces up. I added the aqua colored beads for now too.
They will probably change when I do the Valentine Mantel.
I'm loving the dangling sparkle on my old sconces.
Small faux succulents add a little color.
This silver has just the right amount of tarnish....but then it will get to be too much
and I'll have to polish.
I can't believe Petra gave me her silver trays but she does have lots of other nice things.
She really didn't need them...but I do!
Took a shot of the chandelier in the room...
I am having so much fun photographing in here ever since I painted the room.
Everything looks better with the new wall color.
See that burnt out bulb? I hid it in the above photo...
That bulb had been burned out for awhile but not the others.

So before Christmas, I climb on a step stool to change it out.
When I put the new bulb in....there was a popping sound and all the lights went out in the living room.
Ugh....
I checked my breakers and one had blown.
I have two breaker boxes....a big one outside and a little one in the kitchen.
The big one was fine but the little one had a burnt fuse.
Thankfully that fixed the lights in the living room but now my dimmer switch does not work
for the chandelier and I assume that socket still doesn't work.
I put the old bulb back in.
I'm scared to try a new bulb again.

This chandelier is very heavy. It's the only light in the house that I had professional installed.
It was just too much for me to do alone.

Now I guess it will have to come down....be checked over and rehung.
Which sounds like a big job.
So it's probably going to stay like this for awhile.

So expect to always see one dark bulb in my chandi for awhile.

Mod Mix Monday #133

A great big vintage junk bar cart to get the party started for the New Year.
It is that time....time to start a new year....or almost anyway.
but

First,
the reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated.
Yes, I've been gone for so long some of you worried something was seriously wrong.

I just had too much going on with trying to get ready for Christmas and working and
I got a serious cold and flu too.
I'm still sniffling but much better.

It was all I could do to put one foot in front of the other for a few days there.
Posting seemed impossible.

I could go on and on about how my holiday was.
It was weird.
I tried to make it the best but it just turned out strange.

I was going to tell you all about it...but it might be better left unsaid.
I did get to spend it with my Mom although it was rushed, I was sick and it was weird.
Mom didn't care. She is a trooper.
We'll try again next year.

I could talk quite a bit about my observance of how people were acting this Christmas.
I'm afraid I'd sound quite a bit like Charlie Brown talking about the over commercialization of it and all.

I will say....sales at the store were slow...and people were in a bad mood but as
soon as the holiday was over...sales were brisk and people were in a very good mood.

What does this say?

Before Christmas I'd decided that everyone was in a bad mood because they were having
to spend money on others and not themselves.

I'm afraid what I've noticed after has confirmed my hypothesis.
People were unhappy and mean before Christmas because they were buying for others and
People were happy after Christmas because they were spending money on themselves.

I hate to say it but I'm glad its all over.
I'm very tired.
I even thought about quitting blogging.
But you know what?
The only place that things are really perfect in my life is here on this darn blog.
So....let's get this party started!!!!

Here are my favorites from the last time I held Mod Mix Monday!
Laurel of The North End Loft finished her kitchen remodel.
It's so lovely. Open and airy and they kept all the vintage details.
Over at Home Coming they finished their master bedroom.
It's so fresh and modern!
Look what Karen of Somewhat Quirky Design came up with for Christmas.
A Christmas tree made of stacked light globes!
Karen by the way is an old sorority sister of mine. We reconnected this past summer
after not seeing each other since college. She wrote me one day and said...
"I think I was a Delta Zeta with you."
Yep, we were sleazy DZ's together. small world

Karen of Elderberry Street shared her Christmas Home Tour.
I fell in love with this little corner. It's everything Christmas should be.
Ok, I am in love with this image. It invokes the perfect Christmas by the Sea and it comes
via Mary of Boogie Board Cottage. It's so divine.
Mary also made this wonderful lampshade for one of her lamps this Christmas.
So special.

I feel better already...back in the groove.
Time to start thinking about projects to do in the next year.
Let's look at what your up to now.

Dining Room Inspiration

Today, I finally got a day off from work and I'm making things for my Thanksgiving tablescape.
Hope to show tomorrow.
In the meantime, I thought I'd show some of my favorite dining rooms from my
That one above is decked out for a sweet little Birthday party.
I want a birthday party that looks like that.
That will be my goal for next year.
I'll have to do it for myself but that is ok...I'd love to throw myself a party like that.
I love everything about this room even though it's got lots more wood than I normally go for.
Ok, I might change out the light fixture for a chandelier. Yes, I'd definitely change that out.
A big pretty mirror is always an asset in the dining room.
Wow! I love that table. Isn't it hugely fantastic!
I love how warm this room is.
The chandelier and the rustic china cabinet make this dining room.
Sweet little rosemary topiaries. Love that they have little twig trellises.
Love the wall treatment too.
Why can't I be simple like this?
I've been craving a simplified Xmas decor...
but I know I'll get all my pretty vintage stuff out again this year.
Ok, this is the thing I'm obsessed about currently.
That bench with slipcover.
I have a long ottoman like that in my office which originally was intended as footstool
and storage but it's just always in the way and I stack stuff on it.
It needs to go and I realized it was just the right height to be used as seating in my dining room.
A quick search of Pinterest and I found some wonderful examples
of slipcovered ottomans used in dining rooms.
I am so doing this.
Here's another.
I think it will add a softness to my dining room that the room needs.

Ok, I'm going back to my creating now.
So fun to be home on a beautiful fall day!

In the Greenhouse

Romance in the Greenhouse
Seems gardening is still of thing of our dreams for a little while yet
since much of the country is getting hit with a late winter storm.

Our last freeze is never after the 15th of April....but not this year!
It got super cold last night and cold today.

Good thing I have only bought a few ferns that I can easily move indoors.
So with this last burst of cold weather I've been thinking about greenhouses and wishing I had one.

I am loving the idea of a chandelier in the greenhouse...I'd so do that!

Thanks for your nice comments yesterday on my little HGTV fabric project.
The peeps at Jo-Ann wanted me to share this coupon good for
15% off your entire purchase.
It includes sale and clearance priced items.

I saw quite a few things last time I was there I am going to go back and use this coupon on.
Just print and take in to use now through Saturday, May 4.
