Open House Sunday

Greige Cottage in Dallas
built 1929
This little cottage is all greige on the outside.
It has the typical tudor revival details that I love on houses of this age and size.

The front beds are full of pansies...so cheerful!
A side view of the house house shows it's been added on to quite a bit.
So it's actually pretty big over 2,800 square feet.
So it's a classic tudor revival on the outside but when we go inside.....

This house has been extensively renovated. Which is a shame. Gone are all the vintage details.
Yes, that's an impressive stone fireplace. But I'd rather have what was originally in this cottage.
That's a new door that looks old. I wonder what the original old door looked like?
My gosh that's a huge floor lamp!

The decor is very much Restoration Hardware, isn't it?
The house is greige on the outside and it's VERY greige on the inside.
Walls have been opened inside and new arches put in...problem is these are obviously new arches.
They don't look anything like how original arches look in these homes.
It looks like all new construction inside...gone are any of the 1929 details except for the windows.
There are some really beautiful pieces of furniture in this house but I think this serves as an example that you can have too much of a good thing.
I kind of like the big sofa. I like that weird chair too but it just seems too big.
Hate that coffee table. The room needs some softness here...an ottoman would have been better.
And what is that on the coffee table? Aliens?
I do love this little room. The little Restoration Hardware sofa is just fine here. Fits the space well.
I like those chairs too but the coffee table...is too big and too much.
That hall table I think is RH too. Perhaps the person that owns this house works there.
Very nice kitchen. Notice the steampunk industrial lighting above the kitchen island?
I do love the terrarium here.
Very nice kitchen....greige...greige...greige, though.

I can't help but wonder what the original kitchen was like?
I bet I would have liked it better than this one...even though this one is high end.
Do you like those lights over the island. I do.
Love the feet on the cabinets.
I'd like this kitchen more if it had white subway tile instead of the travertine.
Ok, light fixture....RH.
The rest of the furniture? I don't know.
Notice the bar cart? That is very cool...but it's really large.
I do like the drapes in this house and I'm thinking of doing similar in my own home.
Of course I have to have some color in my rooms.
I can't live in a sea of greige.

Have to say...I really don't like this furniture....I really don't.
In the master...a little RH mixed with a bed from somewhere else.

I'd feel like the Princess and the Pea in this big bed. It would be fun to sleep in with all the dogs though.
A friend of mine has a very similar bed to this except her's is an antique from India.
Anyway...she has to stuff the end of the bed between the mattress and the foot board with pillows.
When she got the bed...I told her she'd have to do that or the dogs would fall down in there.
She did't believe me but after being awoken a couple of times by dogs having fallen through the space.
Yes, she had to stuff it full of pillows.

One time her big 100 pound Shepherd mix got his back legs down there and both she and he didn't know how to get him out. Big moment of panic there. She almost had to call the fire department.
Luckily they finally did get him out without injury.

Wouldn't do for me to have a bed like this Harvey would roll right off and be stuck in that crevice for hours.
A den up in the redone attic. Perfect space to watch tv.
They don't show a tv but I'm sure there must be one.
I have no complaints about this bath.
Love every single thing about it including the gray shower curtain.
That would be the original tub. I'd like the original sink over this big one.
But I do like this sink.
This bedroom has a West Elm vibe, doesn't it?
I wonder if this house is a mix of a husband with contemporary tastes and a wife with antique desires?
Very nice bath.
I'd style the shelves differently and why brown towels when everything else in this house is gray?
Lovely pool out back and the greige continues but it's nice with a little blue isn't it.
Can you imagine if a little blue were added inside? I think it would bring the interiors to life.
Gray outdoor furniture. Love those planters.
This would be my favorite area of the yard. Love love love this stone patio.
I wonder what that is planted between the stones?
Large covered patio...Love the curtains.
I wonder why this doesn't have furniture on it?
It would be so good if it did.

So what do you think of this house?
Too much of a good thing?
It's too greige for me. It's too much RH.
I love some of it but it would be better with a little color added in
and I would not have taken out the original fireplace.

Seems most of the vintage character is gone.
Oh...it's pretty and many would love...but I'd prefer it more original.

See the full listing here.

One more thing...
I also ran across this house when I was looking for a cottage to show.
The inside was not blog worthy but I fell in love with the outside.
Especially the pots of purple pansies at the steps.
Notice the pansies in the flower beds too?
Oh...Love the way this looks...just love, love, love it!

See full listing here.

Have a Happy Sunday!
I'm lucky and get to stay home on this cold blustery day.
I asked off so that I could be sure to be home watching the Oscars.
Otherwise I would have been at the store setting up for next month's event during the whole show!

Super happy that I'll be home or I might go to a friend's but I'll be watching that is for sure!

Open House Sunday

Hollywood Heights, Dallas Cottage
built 1929
Today's house is a pretty little tudor revival cottage in Dallas.
I know I'd like the people that live here...they have a dog painting over the fireplace.
They must be nice.
Look at that huge ornate mirror in the corner!
Unusual sofa. Looks like a great spot for a nap to me!
Big comfy furniture...an area rug would really complete this room.
Wedding cake chandelier above a picnic sort a table.
I have a soft spot for wedding cake chandeliers.
Looks like there is an industrial bar cart in the corner.
Unusual hutch on the wall at right.
Really love the built ins in this room
and the diamond pane windows.
I do love the cabinets in the kitchen.
The ones on the right appear original while the ones on the left
were probably added at a later date.  This is how most of these homes are.
Originally, cabinets were only on the sink side of the room.
That is how my kitchen was and most in my neighborhood.
See? Those cabinets which are now on the right....don't go to the ceiling.
They don't match the others on the opposite side.
I'm not sure where this is. Looks lie a butler's pantry.
The porch has been closed in on this home. I prefer a porch left open.
They did a nice job on this though. I like the way they trimmed out the arched window/old porch opening.
Pretty little bedroom. I never thought about those ties at the tops of curtains being so distracting.
I guess they are because they show up brightly against the dark walls.
Cute little bath. A friend of mine has a bathroom similar to this with a window above the sink.
It seems weird and poorly planned at first but then just add a mirror in front of it and you get all this
great natural light. When my friend bought her house I thought this strange and she didn't like it
but she ended up loving it because you are doing your makeup in natural light!
Love the claw foot tub and the original pedestal sink.
 Another pretty bedroom.
Again the tabs at the top of the windows are distracting and I always thought I liked those.
Really love this bathroom. The subway tile, the floor, the original medicine cabinet but especially that sink!
I love those kinds of sinks.
This is probably what my sink was like in my house originally.
I now have a newer pedestal sink. It's nothing special. It's not what I would ever choose.
I believe my original one is out in my garage.
A long time ago the people that lived in my house in the 60's and 70's put a bathroom in the garage.
It is nothing fancy and actually its rather scary but the little old man that lived here liked to
work out in the garage and he wanted a bathroom out there so he didn't have to come in the house
to clean up.

So there is a toilet and a sink out there ...both I believe to be the original ones to my master bath.
Maybe someday I'll bring it back in the house.

but back to this house....
Another bedroom...
and an upstairs sitting area. This is the room I'd live in.
Nice backyard but oh...it needs a deck or patio and some landscaping.
Someone will buy this and turn it into a jewel.
I do like the little stone path. I know some weenie dogs that would really love this.
Weenie dogs love walking along paved paths instead of trodding through the grass.

I'm off this today and looking forward to a nice quiet Super Bowl Sunday.

Open House Sunday

Prairie Style Home in Dallas
 built 1913
Great curb appeal.
Really like their historic sign.
Lovely light colors in this big home.
I love the colors in this house.
The woodwork is exceptional.

Love all the panels and columns

I'm not crazy about the black chairs and I'd paint that table white.
Adore the big transoms above the doorways.

I really like the rug in here. It adds to the casual elegance of this room.
What do you think of the window treatments?
I like them though they seem a little casual for this room.
I can imagine long nubby linen drapes instead.

I'm sure this room is an addition. Its on the back of the house.

Wonderful light filled space. With all those windows, it's greenhouse like.
I do think that there are too many spindles going on here.
Not sure what should have been done instead
but that's just a lot of posts...it resembles a porch which is pretty but kind of weird inside.
What do you think?

I wonder if someone really sits here and plays the piano.

That's a pretty little chandelier above.

Pretty little spot to sit and read. This is a big house!
Very nice office. I love that desk. If this were my home...I'd go ahead and paint out the wood white.
Just cause this room seems like it doesn't go with the rest of the house like this.
I'd be happy watching tv here.
I'm not crazy about this bathroom. It's very nice and I usually like toile but this isn't working for me.
A fireplace in the master is always good.
Now we're shakin'. I really love these cabinets.
Love this whole kitchen. But of course I would, It's similar to my own...all white and black.
I love how tall the cabinets are. I wish my own were tall...They will be one day.

Upstairs sitting area. There seem to be too may places to be in this house.
Is that possible?
A dining room upstairs? I think a bit odd.

It almost feels like a hotel...there are so many places to be.
Here a bar to enjoy your favorite drink.
Wonderful backyard that includes sports equipment. Here a soccer net...a water basketball hoop.

There is also an entire basketball court! Boys must live here.
Backside view of the house shows off the huge addition on back.
I kind of feel like that addition is just too much.
It's a gorgeous home for sure but who really needs a two story atrium on the back?
It's a lot of wasted space. It looks to me like a museum from the outside and I can just imagine
a huge dinosaur bone exhibit inside. Like a tyrannosaurus rex skeleton should be looming through those windows.
Or there should be massive plants and trees inside like a botanical garden.

I know I'm being mean...and picky. It just seems too much.
