Ocean Dreams

Shell-i-cious!
This time of year...I always start dreaming of a beach vacation.
If I came into a huge bunch of money....I'd do all the things
I want to do to my little cottage and I'd buy a cottage by the ocean somewhere.
I wouldn't live there all the time...but I'd want it to go to any time I wished.
This cottage would do nicely!

A few shells on a silver tray is always good.

Love the painted paneled walls and that pink coral print in this room.
 via
A maiden hair fern is always so pretty....never thought to mix one with shells.

dreaming of the ocean

I feel like I'm totally missing this summer.
I don't like that feeling...that it's half gone and I haven't really done
anything summer like.

But if I keep on track and work hard...perhaps by next year I can afford a week at the beach.
That would be nice... nice indeed.

Open House Sunday

Bridgehampton, New York
I wish I had a photo of the outside of this home...but alas...I do not.
But it's gorgeous on the inside.
It was designed by
What's not to love in that photo?
Love the board and batten painted different colors. Didn't think I'd like that...but
I do because it's subtle.
Love that hall table with the marble top.
Very industrial table and I'm not sure what that chandelier is but I like it.
Love the wall of glass front cabinets.
Yes, there is a lot of grey in this home and it's lovely.
I don't know if that is a window or a mirror at the end of the hall.
What do you think? It sure looks good.
Love this room. Light and bright and perfect for by the sea.
Amazing wingback chair.
I really adore this room.
All those windows are great and the colors but you know what I realized
made me really love this room?....that little bit of purple on the table.
That tiny shot of purple brings life to this room.
Shows how important a little bit of flowers can be.
Here we are in the kitchen.
Wow! That big display case is amazing in this space.
A perfect place to put all your dishes and serving ware.
What do you think about those lights?
Amazing, aren't they?
What a great big kitchen!
I like the hardware on the cabinets.
There are really some great ideas in this home.
That wall of what I guess is old steel industrial windows...really adds character.
Looks like the opposite one is filled with old cloudy mirror.
What a great collection of miniature ships on the wall.
Ok, I really love this. I know I say I love a lot but a mirror in front
of a window is something you'd think you should not do but
it works here so well.
Serene bedroom with a view.
Not sure which room this is....this is all they showed of it.
I sure would like to see the rest.
And a dramatic powder room.
Isn't that mirror perfect in this spot?

I can just imagine a sea captain living here.
It's nautical without any clichéd choices.

Seashell Bottle Tutorial

I made another shell topped bottle for my mantel this week.
I decided perhaps my mantel did need a little more stuff.
I added a couple of shells, the bottle and two glass balls I'd forgotten I had.

I thought I'd tell you how I made the seaglass/seashell topped bottles.

They are very easy... here are the steps...
Supplies needed...
white glue or mod podge. Elmer's works great.
Shells and bottle purchased at Michael's and food coloring.
Oh...yeah...cool temp hot glue gun and silver paint.
The bottles I made two weeks ago I used an old olive oil bottle, a vinegar bottle and a bottle I bought
at the flea market.
All of them I changed the color of like in this tutorial.
Mix a bunch of white glue with several drops of food coloring. I added a little bit of water too.
It will take more food coloring than you'd think because it lightens as it dries.
Just pour the mixture into a bottle and shake well.
Turn the bottle over and let the glue drip out.
I suggest shaking it out. You want to get as much of the liquid as possible out because
extra liquid will cause drips.
I used my hairdryer to speed up the drying.
I tried air drying and I got drips and the bottom of the bottle still had liquid in it after sitting over night.
So dry with a hairdryer and turn the bottle as it dries.
You'll know it's drying because it will turn translucent.
Just takes a few minutes.
Here is the finished tinted bottle. I still got some drips...but I think it adds to the charm.
I also went a little green on this one....too much yellow.
I like them a little more blue.
Cut a piece of styrofoam to fit the opening.
Carve out a little hole in the styrofoam to place the shell into.
Heat up the ol' cool temp glue gun and glue the tip of the shell into it.
Then going around and around a little at a time doing small strips of glue.
I've gotten better at this, now that I'm on shell bottle number four.
I kept a bowl of water at hand and I'd dab on about an inch of glue and immediately
put my fingers in water and then smooth the glue out with my wet fingers.
No burns...this way and I got a nice smooth finish.
Doing this I could mold the glue to my liking.
The first one I did was all lumpy....and that is why I started smoothing with my fingers.
Now just brush paint a silver paint over the cooled glue.
And we're done!
See the lumpy bottle to the left?
I added a few more shells to the living room after making the bottle.
A silver tray full of shells brings the ocean to the coffee table.
All those sand dollars were sent to me last year from MVL reader...Traci G.
She picked them from the beach, dried and bleached them and sent them to me.
Such a sweet gift....Thanks, Traci!

Clam Shells in Decorating

She wishes for seashells
from down by the seashore.
Oh.....my!!!!!
Shells and mirrored furniture with gorgeous tile.
Does it get any better than this?
I'm kind of obsessed with huge clam shells at the moment.
I want one soooo badly.
That's amazing....right?
Love that wallpaper or stencil or whatever it is.
Brass fixtures never looked so good.
I'd be happy with one on my coffee table.
They look good with any kind of decor.
Real ones are super expensive.
But this faux one is on sale right now at Ballard Designs.
$129
I actually like the fake ones better because that means the real ones stay in the sea.
Pottery Barn has one too
Their's is super big and only $99!!!!
This one looks to be of cement.
Very chic
So pretty in a bath.

I broke my rule about decorating with shells this year.
I usually think that you shouldn't decorate with shells unless you live somewhat close to water.
But I was tired of not getting to enjoy them in the summer.
So this year I broke out the shells.
Thanks mostly to several people who sent shells to me late last summer.
I have plenty to decorate my living room and dining room with.
I'll show soon.
Won't have a large clam shell though...unfortunately unless I make one out
of chicken wire and paper maché. Which I think is totally doable.
