Valentine's Mantel

Be Mine...
I've decorated my fireplace mantel for Valentine's Day.
A bit of a challenge...because I wanted to do it without buying anything new.
I know fake flowers are tacky, but if I did real...this could only be up a few days.
Plus I can't afford real ones.
So I gathered all the roses that have been packed away for months and put them out.
The focal point of this display is this stone heart with a key.
My sister gave it to me several years ago.
I don't know how many times I've taken it out of storage and tried to think of something to do with it.
Then the other day...when I was trying to think of some way of decorating for Valentine's
without buying a bunch of stuff -
I all of a sudden remembered this heart.
I also pulled out some tarnished silver candlesticks I've had for a very long time.
Hearts ornaments hang from the chandelier.

Let me be the first to say...gorgeous and sooo romantic. That chandelier is so sparkly and I love the reflection in that antique mirror. Great post! Dawn

You put the bling in love. Fabulous!

Your fake flowers are not tacky. Fake flowers are tacky when they are in colors that real flowers do not come in. Your displays are done beautifully! No tacky there!

I agree with the above comment! I love fake flowers and use them often to decorate. I can't afford real ones either, so some pretty fakes are the next best thing!

It's beautiful! Looks like a shot from Romantic Home. I declare 2011 the year of the artificial flower, due to the economy. It's going to be hard though.........waiting for summer to bring in the real thing!

Nita, there is never anything tacky about your decor. Everything looks absolutely stunning!

I love your cherub heart with the key! I would leave it out all year if it was mine:) Everything looks so pretty and festive. I use fake flowers also but I think they always sound better if I refer to them as 'faux'. They've come a long way I think and some look very real!

your chandelier looks fantastic! And no, the faux roses are not tacky! :) Really pretty, Nita.

Nita the mantle looks so romantic and pretty. You can't even tell the flowers look fake, they look pretty good to me. What is that little heart faced thing? Your sisters stone heart and key is perfect isn't it? Using what you have sometimes makes the best vignettes. But my absolute fav is the fabulous chandelier with the dripping hearts in pink and red. I LOVE that!!

I was just reading an article about how even Preston Bailey will sometimes use faux flowers, so you're in good company. And your vignette is, as always, adorable (as are you!)

Your mantel is so pretty! Fake flowers may seem tacky to some but not to me. I think they are very practical. And I love the look they can give the room without all the hassle.

I really need to get myself think about decorating my house for Valentines day. Thanks for the inspiration.

I am new here, but wanted to say that I have really enjoyed browsing your blog and am looking forward to returning to view more posts. I am from OKC but have always lived on the far northern sides of town and have always been in love with the historical neighborhoods and am looking at buying a home in Edgemere Park. Problem is, my husband is worried about crime and believes it would be safer to stay on the northern part of town, perhaps even Edmond. Edgemere Park seems like such a quiet, beautiful neighborhood. Could you perhaps offer any info regarding crime, safety, and what it is like to live in this beautiful, historical neighborhood. Since I don't know anyone personally who lives in this area of town (other than a realtor) it would be of great help. Thanks -
Michelle

Michelle -
I tried to email you and could not because you came up no reply. So I hope you come back over here and read my comments again. If you'll email me...I'll answer more... nitastacy@gmail.com

First you have to love old houses and all their quirks to love living here in Edgemere Park. I grew up in an old house so I knew it would mean lack of closet space and things that need to be repaired. But my home too is one of the smaller ones in the neighborhood and I'd say most have more storage than mine. You have to be prepared to follow historic rules pertaining to the outside of your home.

That said...I wouldn't live in any other neighborhood. I love it here.

Two of my neighbors came from Edmond (there are plenty of others in the neighborhood) but I know that the two couples I know well that moved here from Edmond - love it. And do not ever want to move back. Both actually thought they would live her temporarily and decided to stay for good.

This is a great neighborhood. I have the best neighbors in the world. We all look out for each other. We do have security that patrols the neighborhood which keeps crime down. The next neighborhood over does not have security and yes...they have break ins and what not. And there have been break ins in my neighborhood too.

Personally, I would not want to live anywhere else. My best friend moved into the Bell Isle neighborhood three summers ago. She'd always lived in Edmond and she says that it was the best thing her and her husband have done. She hates when she has to drive into Edmond now.

But you do have to take precautions....keep your doors locked. Have a security system. Keep valuables put away...like lawn mowers left out WILL disappear. I have not had anything stolen or any problems. But I don't tempt fate.

Anyway....email me and I'll answer more questions. There are several houses for sale in the neighborhood now. But there will be more as the weather warms up.

Oh...if you have children be prepared for them to go to private school or they need to qualify to get into a charter school. Both Classen and Harding are excellent. I know kids that have gone to Classen and McGinnis and they are getting first rate educations.

I love it, Nita!
The chandelier with all the hearts is amazing and I love your heart with the lock. I have a heart the same but no key. I purchased it at Disneyland in their home decorating store many years ago (probably 15) when my daughter was small, it hangs in my bathroom. I really love what you've done with yours, so nice it's from your sister.
I love your blog, want to spend a quiet day with a cup of tea.

Well done as always!
You know how to work "magic"!

I personally try to ignore the holiday....those Jane Seymour jewelry, Pandora (is that it?) and all those "He went to Jared" ads are giving me a headache....I start flipping channels. It's so commercial. Puke. If someone can't be more imaginative than that...Give me a handmade card and an unusual flower.
Hmmm, it's probably why I'm single. LOL!

Your flowers are GORGEOUS!!! I have allergies, so fake flowers for me, please! I have to get faux Poinsettias, too, because of the dog. You display your flowers so beautifully. They look amazing. I will practice hard to get the look of the flowers in your vase. Perfect!
