Harvey the Hero

Yes, It's True!
Harvey Bing a Ling a Ding Dong Dog
Yesterday, Harvey saved Franklin.
You know....Harvey has not been that thrilled with Franklin since he came to live with us.
He likes him ok, but he gets mad at him when he gets near the food especially when I am around.
He also gets jealous if Franklin gets attention from my Mom (his Grandma) and snaps at him.
Harvey never snapped at anything before Franklin came.
Harvey loved Newman the most and you can tell he still misses him.

So yesterday I let all the weenies out while I got ready to go to work.
They'd been out at least 30 minutes when I heard Harvey barking very loudly.
He doesn't usually bark during the day.
He prefers to stand on the deck at night and bark at nothing.
But these are not ferocious barks....more of a Hey! Hey! Hey!

But yesterday I should have known there was something wrong because he was barking
very excitedly and a lot. A whole lot.
He was barking like he does if he sees a dog near their yard.
Violet barked some too in a high pitch...which is her I see something bark.

I don't know what I was thinking.
I was running late getting ready for work and I just didn't think.
So I'm in the bathroom putting makeup on and doing my hair and Harvey comes
running in the house in his little roly poly hoppity way.

He came into the bathroom and barked at me several times and then ran back out
through the kitchen to the backyard.
I followed....to see what he was upset about.

When I got to the backdoor and looked out...I could see the gate was wide open!
Someone had opened the gate...probably when he'd started barking in the first place!
I have no idea who could have done this.
Harvey stayed on the deck barking.
Violet came back in through the gate...I don't know where she'd been.
(Sally was hid under the bed during all of this....that is where she is whenever things get exciting.)
And Franklin? Franklin was out on the driveway sniffing all around.
As soon as I went out to the driveway...off he went...nose to the ground.

I chased him a few houses down and finally grabbed him when he stopped to smell something.
He was WAY easier to catch than Newman ever had been.
Newman was impossible to catch.
So I scooped him up and carried him back to the yard.
Harvey was on the deck...no longer barking.

I said, "Oh Harvey! You are such a good boy. You saved the day!"
"You saved Franklin!"

He wiggled all over and smiled. He was very proud of himself.
He really was.
He did a little happy dance and wagged his tail and smiled.

He really had come in the house to tell me something was wrong and to get me to come get Franklin.
Isn't he smart?

So I don't know if he was telling on Franklin to get him in trouble or letting me
know so I could rescue Franklin. Either way....it was pretty smart of him.

If he hadn't come and got me, it would have been another ten minutes before I'd gone out and
Franklin would have been long gone and Violet might have decided to go too.

So thanks to Harvey all are safe....he really is a Hero.
I'd like to kill whoever opened the gate.
It was not me.
I always double check that the gate is latched and we'd been out earlier and it was closed.
But I was so thankful that all were ok and in a rush to get to work...
I was late now...
that I didn't think very much about it. But now...I'm kind of freaked out by it.

Here's a few pics of Harvey's backside. It's so funny because he is the shy one.
He is the one that doesn't take initiative. He usually waits to see what the others are going to do.
He doesn't ever get into trouble.
But yesterday, he was the one who decided -
 To Go Get Momma!
Violet and Harvey snooping around the backyard.
Read here about the other night Harvey was a hero.

I'm so proud of him.

And maybe he likes Franklin more than I thought he did.

Favorite Halloween Ideas

Creepy Goodness
It's time to start decorating my cottage for the scariest time of the year.
Actually, I don't think of Halloween as scary but as magical.
Maybe black magical whereas Christmas is white magical.

Anyway...I have big plans for my decor.
But then I had big plans for my potting bench and that never happened.
But in my defense I decided it could wait till next winter to be painted so that
it's ready for next spring. It was so hot here and I was done with planting for the year.
But I am going to stage it for fall as is.

So these are all really cool Halloween ideas gathered and saved into my

That idea above involves old photos with led lights for eyes.
You can buy the led lights already wired up on Ebay.
This one is simple black poster board with vintage graphics printed on paper and
taped inside the black frames. Then put a candle inside.
I think I'd do led candles. Just to be safe.
This idea comes from the Curious Sofa. I adore this and every year I try to think of a way
to incorporate this into my decor. Alas, I don't have a good place to hang these.
If I had a giant tree in the front yard...I'd totally do these and hang them in the tree.

By the way...my Maple tree died in my front yard.
I'm looking at it as a blessing in disguise because I was worried that I should not have planted
it. Since maples seek out water and it was planted right in line with my water line.

Yes, I think it was good that it died even though I really loved it.
It grew like crazy for five years and then stopped and got sick last year.
This year it died. I'm pretty sure it was caused by root girdling.
That's when the roots grow around and around in a circle till they choke the tree.
I did not pull the roots apart when I planted and I possibly planted it in too small of a hole.
Apparently maples are prone to it.

So....it died at the early part of summer. But....it is still in my yard much to the concern of
my friend and neighbor Petra.
Every time she sees it she asks when I am going to do something about it.

I keep saying that one of these days my Mom is going to bring up the chainsaw and cut it down.
But my Mom had foot surgery and it has not been of the utmost importance to her.

So last time Petra asked and this was like the fifth time.
I said that I'd decided it should stay through Halloween because it is the perfect Halloween tree and
that I might paint it orange.

She then said the neighbors would be very upset about that.
And she thought it very inconsiderate of me.
I don't think she got it that I was joking.

I truly meant for it to be gone by now.

And yet it is still there.

So back to good Halloween ideas.
Isn't this a clever idea? Just photo copy old buildings or print them from your computer.
Cut then out around the roof line and tape around a glass cylinder.
You can find cheap glass cylinders at Michael's.
I can imagine a whole mantel of these or a buffet filled with them.

We sold Halloween, Thanksgiving, Fall and dining room stuff like crazy yesterday at Pier 1.
Everyone is gearing up for the upcoming Holidays.
Our first Christmas shipment comes in tomorrow.

So last night when I got home... I clicked on one of my favorite blogs (really, truly) and found out
I'd won Debra's giveaway of a Goose Creek Candle!
Oh...boy I was thrilled.
I can't wait to get it and burn it.
Oh...and Debra has some great Fall and Halloween decorating too on her blog.

Today, my mission is to drag out the big bins of Halloween stuff in my garage and
start transforming my cottage.

Mod Mix Monday #70

This is my last opportunity to show blue hydrangeas on the blog till
next Spring and really it's too late in the season to show these now but...
I adore blue hydrangeas.
Yesterday I pointed out a room that I felt was just made perfect by the hydrangeas on the table
and today this is the same thing.
This room probably would not have stopped me except for those blue flowers.
But then I looked at the rest of the room and love other details in it.
That sofa table is so rustic and good against the aqua blue walls.
I like those flat candlesticks too.
That screen is pretty wonderful also.
But its the hydrangeas that just bring it all to life.

So much good fall stuff happening in last week's Mod Mix Monday...
I'll be showing some of mine soon.
I don't really do fall until after Halloween.
But I'll do a little before I start showing Halloween.

Much of next month will be devoted to Halloween here on the blog.
If you don't like Halloween you might not want to hang out here.

Ok, here are the highlights of last week.
Look at Custom Comforts perfect early fall porch.
Martha of Leone Design painted this mid century dresser mustard yellow
leaving the drawers its original wood tone.
Her philosophy is every home needs at least one piece of mid century furniture.
I think she is right. I still need my one piece.
I'm still regretting a mod wingback chair I saw once and didn't get.
Kate of Chic on a Shoestring shared her mercury glass pumpkin collection she acquired by
haunting TJ Maxx repeatedly. That was my plan too but it went awry.
Lisa at Fern Creek Cottage made herself a vintage looking bread board.
All it took was a cheap pizza board bought at Target, some distressing,
the addition of steel wool stain and a little wax.
Now I want to make one of these and I had no idea I wanted one till I saw her's.
I also used the steel wool and vinegar stain myself Saturday night and it works very well.
Leaves you smelling like vinegar though and my fingernails are stained.
I'll show what I used it on this week.
Stacey of A Sort of Fairytale updated her kitchen by painting her backsplash white.
It really changed up her vintage kitchen for the better.
I love a white backsplash....you just can't beat it.
Laura of Whimsical Perspective painted this piece for herself and added the
fantastically cloudy vintage mirror. I am crazy for the color of it with that wall color.
Isn't that mirror great?
Lavender Cottage found this wicker sofa at Goodwill for $90.
She painted it and covered the cushions and look at it now.
I love this thing.
Angela of Number Fifty Three turned a 1990's hutch into this magnificent piece.
She took the doors off, painted it white and shabbied it up.
I love it, especially filled with the things she's put in it.

I'm always amazed by all the things you accomplish each week.
Can't wait to see what is up this week.

Remember anything old made over to be new...anything new changed up to look old.
New and old together...
