Is It a Vase?

Do you know what this glass container is?
I've been wanting one of these for quite awhile and last month I bought one off of Ebay.
It's not a vase. Do you know what it is?

Here are other examples of these glass containers I found on line.
Do you know what all these vessels are? I'm sure some of you do.
They are celery holders! They make very nice flower vases.

I was thinking it was a loving cup with the two handles...interesting! I think celery was a big deal in the victorian age. But then again, they made everything seem special didn't they?

Interesting, I Like! I have put cellery standing in a glass of water in the refrigerator to keep them fresh and crisp, these must be for serving them. They are pretty!

I would have guessed a two-handled beer mug. You can never hold on too tight to your beer!

What do I know?

How formal dining used to be to have something just to hold celery. They are lovely though.

I learned something new today! I have a weekness for vases and a small collection... I'll have to take a second look to make sure they really are vases!

Interesting! I personally have never felt a need to display my celery. I wonder what was used for broccoli? Or.... green peppers? Is there a carrot vase also?

Very pretty for vases though!!!

Hi Nita,
I had no idea what it was. I love the way you have used it, and the silver tray next to it is lovely. Is that yours?

I don't think it is a celery holder. It is a spooner. Used for holding spoons on the table for coffee or dessert when company is coming. My great-grandmother always had hers out and I grew up with seeing them used that way. I have heard of them used for celery, although I do not believe that is their original function. Please correct me if I am wrong. Maybe you have something unique. Are they especially tall?

They did everything fancy back in the old days! I'm always in awe of what I see at antique stores. Such glorious ways of entertaining and keeping food looking elegant!

It is a spooner. I knew a lady that had a gorgeous collection of them. My Grama always had hers in the middle of the table with the sugar bowl and salt & pepper.

Are they spooners? I have one but it doesn't have handles.~Ames

I don't think it looks like a celery holder even if that is what it is advertised as. It looks too tall for a spooner but it's hard to tell the proportion from the pic. Could you remove the flowers so we can see the top edge to see what it really looks like? The design is later than Victorian; that is what I like about it, the cleaner lines. It almost looks commercial/industrial like for a restaurant or hotel or some other commercial use.
