Thrift Store Goodness
I bought these silver plated casserole trays a few weeks ago at a local thrift store.
I love the detail of the legs on this one.
I had several ideas of different things I could do with them.
So many actually, that I'm on the look out for more.
I bought a little wood at Lowe's and tiny wood trim at Michael's and came up with this.
I made a tiny shelf out of the wood and painted it silver with a little black glaze.
It totally looks like metal now.
I attached the little shelves to the fretwork of the frame with tiny screws.
I attached the little shelves to the fretwork of the frame with tiny screws.
I hung them using picture frame wire. I kind of have a thing for picture frame wire.
I like the look of it all twisted around the legs.
I've never had a spice rack my whole adult life.
I'm always digging through the shelves trying to find the spice I need.
I won't have that problem any more.
Only problem with this is I need pretty bottles for all my spices.
So now I'll be on the look out for them. I like the Archer Farms (Target) bottle.
But some how I only have one spice in that kind of bottle.
Anyone have any suggestions where I can get some really great spice bottles?
My new spice rack would really be pretty with all matching bottles and labels.
I wanted to wait to show till I'd done that...but who knows how long it will take me to
acquire them.
So you'll just have to imagine what it will look like with pretty bottles all in a row.
**UPDATE**
I filled glass salt and pepper shakers with all my spices and put them in the spice rack.
So much better.
You can see the entire post here.

Isn't that a great idea! I always see these silver plate holders at the thrift. I love the look!

Oh my gosh that's pure genius, GENIUS! I love it. It would also fantastic in a bathroom with perfume bottles, etc.
ReplyDeleteI think some designers and magazines are going to be stealing this idea from you :)
Thanks! Yes, Jeanette...this would totally work in a bathroom too with little perfume bottles on it. You usually find these trays without their glass casserole dishes. I guess the dishes always get broken. I bought them at the thrift store. The day I bought they had a round one too but I only had money for two. I went back the next week for the round one but it was gone. I hope to find some more because I have other ideas for using these.
ReplyDeleteVery cute idea! I have one of this already.
ReplyDeleteTraci
Brilliant! I love this idea, I run across these all the time. I love it!
ReplyDeleteThis is such a wonderful idea. I'm interested in the spice bottles too. Hope you can find a source. I'm up for changing mine out. How about old salt and pepper sets with silver lids in the meantime? just have to figure out a cool vintage label, maybe from the graphics fairy...hmmmm....
ReplyDeletexoxo Debra
This is brilliant! Love the creative way you turned such neat old silver pieces into spice racks! What an eye and what an imagination!
ReplyDeleteBest,
Kimberly
That looks great! Very clever.
ReplyDeleteI like to get my spices from Whole foods. The whole food brand jars are glass with a nice clean design and the bonus is that they are organic too. I have been refilling them for years because I like them so much!

ReplyDeleteOh...thanks for this suggestion. We are getting a Whole Foods very soon. They are building it now. I think it is to open this Fall. I will definitely check out the spices there.
So creative. I could hardly wait to see what you did with them and you didn't disappoint. I wish I had a mind that could think up unique things like that. Very impressive!
ReplyDeleteCindy
That is a great idea that is very clever...I'm so glad I recently found your blog...have a great day!
ReplyDeleteThis is a great idea! I think I have a few of these stashed away somewhere, now I can put them to use.
ReplyDeleteNita, you are so darn smart. I love this idea. Looks great. I checked ebay and they have lots of spice bottles. Some are old milk glass.
ReplyDeleteYou, my dear, are a design genius! Such a cool and beautiful way to add more silver to the kitchen and it is soooo functional. This gets 5 gold stars!

ReplyDeletebrilliant. this is why i love the internet and blogs...because of wonderful ideas i can steal from everyone else....LOL

What a clever idea. I love it! You classed up your spices. Try the Container Store. You can order online too. They have tons of generic little bottles and I've even purchased some that have little stick on labels to write the name of the spice. Yes, you must get some great bottles for those great spice racks!
ReplyDeleteThis is super cute too. You are soo creative. I would get spice bottles at the dollar store and make cute labels on the computer, circle ones would be cute to dress them up.
ReplyDeleteWow! Such a great idea. I love love love it! I'm definitely going to be on the look out for similar trays.
ReplyDeleteNo too long ago before I painted my kitchen I re-styled my spice cabinet. I went to Walmart and bought canning jars. I got the 2 smallest sizes. I emptied all my spices into the jars and used my label maker to mark them. It would be really cute though to use some sort of tag...I'm sure you could come up with something adorable. If you are interested I could send you a picture. This was a totally brilliant idea. I look forward to all your posts...but especially the ones about your kitchen. You are a kitchen queen! Have a great day...
ReplyDeleteLOVE these...as far as jars...could you "cute up" some baby food jars? Remove the labels, paint the lids? Just a thought...cheaper than buying jars...if you know somebody with a baby that is :) Laurel@chippingwithcharm
ReplyDeletenow that is clever nita.

OH the cuteness of that. I just love it. You make it seem so simple....mmmmm!!! It goes perfectly in your kitchen. By the way, I am writing this from Guthrie! Love the Okie-can-do-spirit! Lori L
ReplyDeleteFor some reason I can't copy the link from the sks website, but go to www.sks-bottle.com and look at the clear glass round bottle with lined aluminum caps, they come in all sorts of sizes, some very small spice size and seem to have good prices for buying in bulk . .they would look so pretty with a calligraphy label stuck on them on your SO CLEVER AND UNIQUE AND WONDERFUL spice rack!!
ReplyDeletewhat a great idea! nicely displayed
ReplyDeleteVery creative....love the look
ReplyDeleteA very clever and practical repurpose...I applaud your creativity and inspiring us to think outside the box or in this case the casserole dish!
ReplyDeleteJermiane
OH MY GOODNESS...I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this idea. WOW...I'm good, but never this good. I love the kitchen idea, I love the bathroom idea. I'm absolutely going to use this idea.

ReplyDeleteYou are a smart one! This is Adorable!
ReplyDeleteFabulously clever!!
ReplyDeleteLove it. They are so darn cute and so functional. Perfect combo.
I work not too far from where you live and I would almost bet that you got those trays at St. Vincent on 23rd. I seen those and thought what could I do with these, love them, but would they just sit. That is pure genius to think of hanging them. I hate most spice racks, but these would be killer. Bet I won't walk by them ever again! Thanks! And it is so fun seeing pics of homes that I have actually seen in person and always thought hmmm what does it look like inside? :)
ReplyDeleteThat is a brilliant idea and I do love them!
ReplyDeleteNita, How wonderful and creative! I've seen these in thrift stores but didn't know what to do with them. Fabulous!
ReplyDeletexo,
Sherry
Jess - I did get these at St. Vincent! How funny! You must have seen these very ones there.

ReplyDeleteHugs, Cindy
Ikea and World Market both have great prices on spice bottles.
ReplyDeleteso cool, I love to rethink junk! This is clever and original. Lezlee
ReplyDeleteThis is such a cute idea! I love the little trim you added- nice touch. I don't know if you have a Cash and Carry in your area? They might have some pretty spice bottles. They have a lot of restaurant supply stuff. My other thought was Crate and Barrel? Thanks for sharing at Transformations and Treasures!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea!
ReplyDeleteThat is the most creative use of a tray I've ever seen! How marvelous!!!!! I love how you SEE things as new inventions : ) ... turning normal items into useful treasures!
ReplyDelete~ Violet
Great idea! I love those ...the little legs have such great details. I have some I put burlap in and made a monogram.
ReplyDeleteGreat work.
Benita
Darling idea but not to be a debbie downer, by the stove is the WORST place to store spices. Too hot and creates moisture. To keep your spices nice and fresh, store them in a cool dark place.
ReplyDeleteJust a thought...
I love this idea! I see these at thrift stores all the time.
ReplyDeleteCheck out canning jars. There are some really small ones that might fit on those shelves. I dont exactly know the size of your shelf but if they fit they would all be uniform then :)
ReplyDeletegreat idea.. love it..
ReplyDeleteThis is one of the sot unique ideas I've seen in a long time, and I love it!
ReplyDeleteI am always drawn to those silver bases, but do not buy them for lack of ideas.
Now I have one.
thanks and blessings
barbara jean
Fantastic project! Love your creativeness and the finished look! :)
ReplyDeleteKindly, Lorraine
Great idea Nita! I've seen these casserole totes and have several of the round ones I'll feature in an upcoming post but couldn't think of anything to do with the rectangular ones.
ReplyDeleteMary
Now, that's just genius! I've seen so many of those things in thrift stores and couldn't think of something to do with them. Now I probably won't be able to find them. lol
ReplyDeleteyou are so brilliant! I just love the way that looks in your kitchen - sheer genius!
ReplyDeleteFantastic idea! You are really creative.
ReplyDeleteYou could try Penzey's spices. They sell glass spice jars in varying sizes.
Nothing thrills me more than to see something used "outside the box" and this really fits that category!! Fantastic and creative and just plain pretty!
ReplyDeleteWhat a clever idea. These look great!
ReplyDeleteGENIUS! And so functional, too. I'm your newest follower thanks to Savvy Southern Style. Hope you enjoy my blog, too:

What a great idea! This is an awesome look in the kitchen! I see so many of these at thrift stores and I never thought of this! Thanks for sharing your idea!
ReplyDeleteFor small bits of spice how about the empty bottles of maple syrup from Cracker Barrel? If you don't like the plastic caps you can get small wine corks.
ReplyDelete~Hugs~
Such a pretty idea, and your kitchen is lovely! I have the Target spice bottles, but have also seen quite the selection of empty bottles at World Market. . .they also have SPICES to put in them, and they're quite inexpensive!
ReplyDelete:)
Winner! Great idea, I see these in the thrift store a lot!
ReplyDeleteSusan
How creative! I've never seen anything so pretty for spaces. I'm surprised how much your wood pieces match the metal, too.
ReplyDeleteThey are lovely but be aware that spices stored near a heat source lose their flavor faster than if stored someplace darker and cooler.
ReplyDeleteSo clever and cute! I would try Old World Market for some spice jars. I've gotten there before.
ReplyDeleteWhat a clever idea! I always see these trays at my local thrift store...I'm definitely making my stop there tonight (watch them be gone!).
ReplyDeleteYou have a new follower. :)
Oh my gosh, I love this idea! It is gorgeous! Try World Market, I think I remember them having some cute spice bottles.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely, positively BRILLIANT!
ReplyDeleteOh my I would have never thought of making something like that you are so creative!!!
ReplyDeleteInspiring YOU!

ReplyDeleteI love this idea! You're just the smartest one!
ReplyDeleteBe a sweetie,
Shelia ;)
Cool! I love creative spice racks! Very nice!
ReplyDeletehow cool!!
ReplyDeleteyou have me thinking....I need to figure out how to have my cooking spices beside the stove rather than in the cabinet on the other side of the fridge. Sure would be a lot more convenient.
So very clever! I always see these at the thrift store but never get them because I don't know what to do with them, so thanks for the inspiration because now the wheels in my mind are turning:)
ReplyDeleteDidn't read all the comments, but if you haven't been, Penzey's Spices is incredible and their spice bottles are killer: http://www.penzeys.com/cgi-bin/penzeys/p-penzeysjars.html

ReplyDeleteTry looking for bottles at flea markets. However, I got mine at Pier 1 and made my own labels.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea! I found one at a thrift store and plan to do this. Thanks for the inspiration!
ReplyDeleteAs far as salt and pepper shakers, IKEA has a lot for sale at a reasonable price... I think I got a set of 4 for under $2.... glass with black plastic shaker tops...
