Old Silver Trays

Thrift Store Goodness
I bought these silver plated casserole trays a few weeks ago at a local thrift store.
I love the detail of the legs on this one.
I had several ideas of different things I could do with them.
So many actually, that I'm on the look out for more.
I bought a little wood at Lowe's and tiny wood trim at Michael's and came up with this.
I made a tiny shelf out of the wood and painted it silver with a little black glaze.
It totally looks like metal now.
I attached the little shelves to the fretwork of the frame with tiny screws.
I hung them using picture frame wire. I kind of have a thing for picture frame wire.
I like the look of it all twisted around the legs.
I've never had a spice rack my whole adult life.
I'm always digging through the shelves trying to find the spice I need.
I won't have that problem any more.
Only problem with this is I need pretty bottles for all my spices.
So now I'll be on the look out for them. I like the Archer Farms (Target) bottle.
But some how I only have one spice in that kind of bottle.
Anyone have any suggestions where I can get some really great spice bottles?

My new spice rack would really be pretty with all matching bottles and labels.
I wanted to wait to show till I'd done that...but who knows how long it will take me to
acquire them.
So you'll just have to imagine what it will look like with pretty bottles all in a row.

**UPDATE**
I filled glass salt and pepper shakers with all my spices and put them in the spice rack.
So much better.

  2. Oh my gosh that's pure genius, GENIUS! I love it. It would also fantastic in a bathroom with perfume bottles, etc.

I think some designers and magazines are going to be stealing this idea from you :)

  3. Thanks! Yes, Jeanette...this would totally work in a bathroom too with little perfume bottles on it. You usually find these trays without their glass casserole dishes. I guess the dishes always get broken. I bought them at the thrift store. The day I bought they had a round one too but I only had money for two. I went back the next week for the round one but it was gone. I hope to find some more because I have other ideas for using these.

  6. This is such a wonderful idea. I'm interested in the spice bottles too. Hope you can find a source. I'm up for changing mine out. How about old salt and pepper sets with silver lids in the meantime? just have to figure out a cool vintage label, maybe from the graphics fairy...hmmmm....

  8. That looks great! Very clever.
I like to get my spices from Whole foods. The whole food brand jars are glass with a nice clean design and the bonus is that they are organic too. I have been refilling them for years because I like them so much!

  19. What a clever idea. I love it! You classed up your spices. Try the Container Store. You can order online too. They have tons of generic little bottles and I've even purchased some that have little stick on labels to write the name of the spice. Yes, you must get some great bottles for those great spice racks!

  20. This is super cute too. You are soo creative. I would get spice bottles at the dollar store and make cute labels on the computer, circle ones would be cute to dress them up.

  21. Wow! Such a great idea. I love love love it! I'm definitely going to be on the look out for similar trays.

  22. No too long ago before I painted my kitchen I re-styled my spice cabinet. I went to Walmart and bought canning jars. I got the 2 smallest sizes. I emptied all my spices into the jars and used my label maker to mark them. It would be really cute though to use some sort of tag...I'm sure you could come up with something adorable. If you are interested I could send you a picture. This was a totally brilliant idea. I look forward to all your posts...but especially the ones about your kitchen. You are a kitchen queen! Have a great day...

  23. LOVE these...as far as jars...could you "cute up" some baby food jars? Remove the labels, paint the lids? Just a thought...cheaper than buying jars...if you know somebody with a baby that is :) Laurel@chippingwithcharm

  24. OH the cuteness of that. I just love it. You make it seem so simple....mmmmm!!! It goes perfectly in your kitchen. By the way, I am writing this from Guthrie! Love the Okie-can-do-spirit! Lori L

  25. For some reason I can't copy the link from the sks website, but go to www.sks-bottle.com and look at the clear glass round bottle with lined aluminum caps, they come in all sorts of sizes, some very small spice size and seem to have good prices for buying in bulk . .they would look so pretty with a calligraphy label stuck on them on your SO CLEVER AND UNIQUE AND WONDERFUL spice rack!!

  32. I work not too far from where you live and I would almost bet that you got those trays at St. Vincent on 23rd. I seen those and thought what could I do with these, love them, but would they just sit. That is pure genius to think of hanging them. I hate most spice racks, but these would be killer. Bet I won't walk by them ever again! Thanks! And it is so fun seeing pics of homes that I have actually seen in person and always thought hmmm what does it look like inside? :)

  54. Darling idea but not to be a debbie downer, by the stove is the WORST place to store spices. Too hot and creates moisture. To keep your spices nice and fresh, store them in a cool dark place.
    Just a thought...
