Scary Movies

My Viewing Plans for this Week of Halloween.
All of these in my DVD collection.
1. Nightmare Before Christmas
Some consider this a Christmas movie but I think it's much more a Halloween story.
Moon crossed lovers - Sally and Jack.
All of these listed movies provide great decorating inspiration.
2. The Others
If you haven't seen this one....you must.
This is my favorite kind of scary movie...big on atmosphere....low on gore.
Actually, there is no gore.
It's all atmosphere and story.
Love this movie.
3. Sleepy Hollow
Oh....Johhny Depp, Christina Ricci and Christopher Walken is brilliant as usual.
This movie will really get you in the Halloween mood.
The story is a bit of a jumble but the images are so beautiful....who cares.
Johnny Depp at his best.
4. Sweeney Todd
Johnny Depp, even better. He's totally mad.
So is she.
Quite a bit of blood in this one but it seems more like red paint.
So it really didn't disturb me and I can watch it over and over.
Have been listening to this soundtrack over and over this week too.
Oh... I love this sequence so much.
She loves him so.

and finally....I'm off to find a copy of this today...
5. Trick R Treat
I saw it last year and loved it. Must find a copy.
It's more blood and guts than I normally like but this movie is pitch perfect when it comes to conveying
the sense of Halloween night. The movie's plot involves several intersecting story lines as the characters
enjoy their Halloween night in a small town. The town has a parade and a carnival and lots and lots of
decorations. The whole feeling of this movie is just right. It makes you feel like Halloween made you
feel when you were a kid. But it is pretty scary and lots of blood and guts.
But it's worth it because the art direction is so good.
Oh...that's a bad Trick r Treater.

 Oh...forgot this one...
6. Interview with a Vampire
Brad Pitt...Vampire....yes!

And I'm totally out on "Twilight".
I read three of the books and struggled to get through them because they were so boring.
I only read them because all my friends were reading them and they knew I loved vampire stuff and insisted I read them.
I refused to read the last one.
The movies....are just as bad.

Do you have favorite Halloween movies? I could use some new suggestions.
Have not found a new one to add to my list this year.

  1. Love "The Others" as we close doors fanatically at the old house. You need to read "The Historian" as it is a grown up vampire novel that is very well done and not boring. I like " The Village" by that M.Night guy. Many others I could name if my daughter with the younger quicker mind were here!

  2. I am so not a fan of the blood and gore type movies AT ALL! I LOVED The Others - totally terrified me! Another scary movie I would recommend is Paranormal Activity. I'm trying to find some time in my schedule to see Paranormal Activity II which is a BIG HIT here at the movie theatres in Ontario.

I heard that Paranormal Activity was good and saw that it is on instant play on NetFlix so I might watch it tonight...thanks.

  4. Ha ha! I share your opinion on Twilight...I adore An Interview with a Vampire though too! Same with the Others, Nightmare Before..., and Sleepy Hollow. Sleepy Hollow is just so pretty, I even have a coffee table book that shows lots of great pictures from the movie. :)

  7. That's an impressive scary movie collection you have! We bought Drag Me To Hell at Target and I thought it was really good, scary but humorous. The Ring terrifies me no matter how many times I watch it and there's a movie from 1976 with Jody Foster in it that I have always found spooky, it's called The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane. TCM is showing it sometime this weekend I think. Enjoy your movies and I'm going to have to hunt for the Trick R Treat one, looks good!!!

  8. The Haunting: The original version with Julie Harris, not the horrible remake.

Carnival of Souls: Again, the original. Totally creeped me out when I was a kid, but no gore at all.

Just watched Trick r Treat last week for the first time, and I loved it! I bought it from Amazon sight-unseen, since it only cost $6.49.

  12. I love that I got great suggestions from everyone. I've heard that I should watch the SAW movies - that I would like them....oh...I forgot to mention "The Orphanage". That one is so good too. And I watched "Let the Right One In" to which is the original of "Let Me In" which just came out and I have not seen.

Of course.... "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown" is at the top of the list. It will be on tv this Thursday...I don't think I have a copy of it...but I need one. My Mom has it.

I did watch "House on Haunted Hill" the other night and found it pretty good. And last year I saw "House of the Devil" and it was scary.

Oh and did watch "Drag Her to Hell" last year and just kept saying to the tv...."Oh...bless her heart". She really did get herself in a pickle being cursed by that old gypsy woman.

I don't know if I've seen the original "The Haunting"...I'll have to look for that one.

And I've never seen "The Ring" or "Hocus Pocus" - wow lots of movies I need to see this week.

  13. Favorites that are traditions:
Hocus Pocus has been a tradition of mine since college. Love.
Next, is Practical Magic. It's just perfect in witchcraft and romance.
I adore Sleepy Hollow and the Nightmare Before Christmas and Corpse Bride, they're usually in the mix each year, too.

Just watched The Orphanage and loved it!

Going to watch Drag Me to Hell. The new, yet three-ish-years-old, Amityville Horror looks great. I also have Perfume: The Story of a Murderer--set in period time, with Alan Rickman, in my queue.

I'd also suggest the Exorcist and Rosemary's Baby as classics. The Ninth Gate is good but strange. It's another Johnny Depp one. The Craft is also quite nice. For a slightly lighter, adventurous movie, Van Helsing with Hugh Jackman is good. He fights Dracula, he is shirtless occasionally. :) Set in Romania with Kate Beckinsale.

Thanks for the good suggestions yourself! I haven't made it to Sweeney Todd yet!

    Happy Hauntings!
    Sondra

  14. Hey! Don't forget The Omen!
The original with Gregory Peck (the remake was awful!)
I just watched Interview with a Vampire again yesterday!
Another fav is Dracula with Frank Langella and of course for a love story- Practical Magic.

  17. As someone who has watched waaaay too many Halloween movies this month (currently in the DVD player right now is The Crazies- don't think I would really recommed it though...) I don't have any good suggestions because ALL of my favs are already on your list. Last year my favorite new scary movie find was Trick r Treat. Took me forever to get my hands on it. This year I added Edward Scissorhands to my collection (love Johhny Depp). Sleepy Halloween may be my fav of all time scary movie...Enjoy your movie marathon!

  18. Oh and I watched Practical Magic for the very first time this year. I am probably the only one who has not seen it. The best reason to watch it is just for the house...that amazing breathtaking house with the kitchen of my dreams...

  19. First off, I want to say I love your decorating!! I just found your blog a couple of weeks ago.

I'm a little behind on this comment but I agree with Hocus Pocus. So cheesy but so good and its an overall Halloween feeling that I love to watch every year. And I also agree with you on Sleepy Hallow. Love that movie. The original Fog is scary too. I also like Poltergeist, The Monster Squad and the Craft.

    Happy Belated Halloween!!

  20. I love scary movies, not always so bloody, more on the suspense kind. Your home is decorated so neat, great black and white.
