Early Spring Mantel
It was time for a new display on my fireplace mantel.
I decided to get my Majolica out that's been packed away.
The white finial came from Hobby Lobby several years ago.
I have quite a bit of Majolica which is an antique pottery from the Victorian era.
It's known for its botanical themes, shapes and bright, shiny lead glazes.
A very common pattern is the begonia leaf.
I have about eight of them and wouldn't mind having eight more.
I have about eight of them and wouldn't mind having eight more.
I only decided to use the Majolica on the fireplace when I was emptying out the buffet in the dining room to paint it.
I placed a few pieces on the mantel and decided I really liked it.
There is currently more of it stacked about the room...since the dining room is all a mess
because of my painting project.
because of my painting project.
I especially like the turquoise and green but there are bits of pink and yellow too.
I've always loved the colors in these glazes and they have inspired my decorating
color scheme for many years.
Majolica was very much in high style...the in thing to collect in the late 80's, early 90's....
but has since dwindled in popularity.
but has since dwindled in popularity.
But I still love it and I think it's perfect for spring with it's bright pastel colors and nature themes.
Everything comes back in style eventually.
I remember oogling over pages in the design magazines that showed shelves stuffed with the stuff.
I wanted hundreds of pieces. But I've learned I don't need a lot of something.
Ok, I take that back...I didn't learn it....I've got lots of mercury glass.

Anyway I have a nice Majolica collection (perhaps 40 pieces) but I'm not sure where to display it all
since moving in this house.
So lots of it has been packed away.

I used to really be mad for it. I still love it but have been leaning more towards
silver sparkly things of late, hence the mercury glass.
In my search for a terrarium...I found this small cloche at TJ Maxx last month.
The little butterfly and bird's nest inside came from Michael's.
I still have not made a terrarium. I haven't found any nice small plants.
But this little cloche with the faux stuff inside seemed to fill my need for a bit of green under glass.
I'm loving the simplicity of this display and the bright pastels.
After all the pink I had out for Valentine's, I'm enjoying the change.
I was in the mood for turquoise and green.
I'm ready for Spring!

Beautiful, Nita. I love your mirror so much! Your colors will transition so nicely into Easter.
ReplyDeleteI love absolutely everything on your mantel. I'm crazy for venetian mirrors and yours is gorgeous. I also had some majolica pieces and love it too!!!
ReplyDeleteMy sister and I started collecting it and she ended up with over 250 pieces and she still displays it all in a huge glass front cabinet.
Both of us are now decorating with more silver and glass.
hugs
Sissie
Very very pretty and they seem to go perfectly with your mantel. I was thinking perfect for spring before I even read your same thought about it :)
ReplyDeleteMy mother really likes Majolica, I'm a mercury glass fan myslef.
Absolutely beautiful! I love everything you used to accessorize your mantel for spring. Martina
ReplyDeleteStunning..looks beautiful on the mantle, the colors are so pretty...great pieces to decorate around.
ReplyDeleteYour majolica has such pretty colors, I am used to seeing darker greens..and I remember the popularity of it too. It looks great on your mantel Nita! Do you think of hanging any of the collection on your wall in the dining room or kitchen?
ReplyDeleteWow, Nita you have a wonderful majolica collection. Those are so expensive in the antique shops. I saw loads of them at Scott's antique market. I am going to make a couple of terrariums, too. I googled and found what I need to get and just need to go get the stuff. I have plenty of containers. Thanks for sharing this at WUW.
ReplyDeleteNita, you are the queen of finials and your majolica collection is lovely up there on the mantle. ♥O
ReplyDeleteLoved your majolica collection. Your mantel was the perfect place to display your collection.
ReplyDeleteStunning as usual!

ReplyDeleteGorgeous again Nita! Love the majolica.
ReplyDeleteNita, I am continually amazed by your vision for decorating your home. The majolica is perfect for spring and always your venetian mirrors and this time reflecting your pretty chandy. All so pretty.
ReplyDeleteI can't get over how beautiful your fireplace is! the majolica is perfect for it!!!! so pretty.
ReplyDeleteok. my husband never reads my blog unless I tell him to go read a story in it. but anyway, it's a joke here about his buying sprees on tv buying. sick, sick, sick. hehe. now he is all caught up on these Waterford pieces. He has already bought a lot for the family for next christmas!!!!!!
he's crazy. but the sweetest, most giving man in the whole.
Stunning...I love how soft and warm it is...Perfect for spring time.
ReplyDeleteBlessings Kelsie
Love that miror! judy
ReplyDeleteOh, Nita! The majolica is so pretty. I have always wanted to collect it, but I do not own a single piece. I saw a pretty asparagus dish in an antique store yesterday that I thought about buying. I even bought a painting recently because it had majolica on the mantel, LOL! The pieces you have displayed compliment your fireplace tile surround very nicely. GORGEOUS!!!

Hi Nita, I love your majolica! I don't care if it's in or out of style and who's to say what's in or what's out these days anyway. It's all so over the lot.
ReplyDeleteIf I had 40 pieces I'd have them all massed in one place for maximum effect. Guess the trick to decide where. The colors will make a gorgeoso wall IMO. Thanks for stopping by -- glad to see yours! It looks good on the mantel too - good things look good anywhere in the house. Jane
The mantel looks great--those finials from Hobby Lobby are really nice. Your Majolica is really nice--love all the different patterns. Congrats on being in the home tour!

Great mantle, and the majolica is just beautiful! It gives an old world touch to the whole thing, which is perfectly complemented by the butterfly in the jar. I also like your candle arrangement instead of a fireplace!

ReplyDeleteYou had me at majolica...lol...my collection is in a curio cabinet. And I love this time of year when I can bring it out and use it in my Easter displays. I remember the days when you could find a piece of majolica at the flea market...now..not one single piece...
ReplyDeleteGreat blog!!!
