Day Trip

to Guthrie, Oklahoma
Last weekend I took a little day trip to Guthrie, Oklahoma. This town almost seems as if time has stood still. It was the original Capitol of Oklahoma till 1910. I had always heard the state documents and state seal were stolen in the middle of the night and the move was made. But I just read up on it and apparently an election was held to decide where the capitol should be and Oklahoma City won the election. Although Guthrie was not happy about it. Guthrie is only about 35 minutes north of downtown Oklahoma City but seems a world away. There are many housing developments outside of the town but the downtown of Guthrie and town proper seem to still be in the Victorian age. I had not been there in many years and was surprised to find it much the same.
There are many Victorian homes in this town and the Victorian downtown still stands.
This is just one of many amazing Victorian homes in Guthrie.
But this was my main reason for making the little trip. I'd seen this vintage garden gate on Facebook Marketplace and knew I had to go get it. I have been in desperate need of a new gate. I wanted a wood one but just have not gotten around to building one. I have patched my existing gate many times to get me by and it's on it's last legs. It was never a nice gate to begin with.

I remember the day I bought this house my Mom exclaimed -
"What a nice gate and carport!"
Both things that were just awful. But that's my Mom.
She only sees the good.
The carport has long been gone. Thank goodness. It practically removed itself.
Falling apart a little more after every bad bit of weather.
Here's the gate setting in it's new home. Now I have to buy poles to install it on and hinges.
Another project. But I got this gate at a good price and I think it's pretty. I will probably paint it and add some metal scroll work to it to make it prettier. The main thing is it's very sturdy and will keep those pesky weenie dogs in their yard!
Back to Guthrie - Another lovely large home.

I'd love to sit on the porch of this one and have a glass of ice tea.
Now for some photos of downtown. I went in and out some of the antique stores while there.
Very unusual architecture. It's Victorian but rustic at the same time.
 Look at the details!
It was hard to get a good photo of this one. The sun was behind it. This town is a mix of Old West and Victorian sensibilities.

And finally, I had lunch with a friend last Wednesday - Elaine. She gifted me this lovely scarf.
She knows I have a thing for flamingos. It's almost too pretty to wear. I draped it in the living room for a few days as I like to pretend I live in a place by the ocean during the summer and display flamingos and shells. It's still hot here. But I'll be getting the fall stuff out this week.
Today when I was out watering I thought geez it feels as hot as ever!
Looked at my phone and it said 91 degrees but feels like 98. Well that would explain it.
It is still hot.

Rose Cottage

Victorian Cottage in Eureka Springs, Arkansas
This cottage is in the latest issue of Country Living.
I opened the pages of this month's issue and was just enamored with this little cottage.
Look at those turquoise floors!
I'm sure you can see why I'm in love with this place.
That turquoise dining table!...so sweet
The mint colored kitchen hutch?...oh...my...precious.
A window seat with big romantic pillows.
The arch windows are amazing.
I love how the woodwork is painted white but the mullions are stained wood.

I love the way this has been styled too. Probably can thank Country Living for that.
I love an unstructured kitchen. A kitchen where there aren't typical kitchen cabinets.
That sink is so great....so big...so long...and what about it's legs?
The little green cabinet is so nifty too.
And how about those walls?
More chippy furniture.
You would think that that floor would not work with that wall...but it does!
Just look at these walls! Scrumptious patina!
The arched window is the perfect backdrop for the bed.
Perfect styling.
A little room under the gable. It's beautiful in its simplicity.
I need that waste basket.
I just realized after looking at this...that I need a mirror on the porch!
Of course!
I don't have a spot for one but it sure brings the outside to the other side of the porch.
This is the little shed behind the house.

You can see more and read all about it at
Country Living

You can rent this cottage!
Check out the website for it.

There are more photos of the cottage on the website.
It's interesting to see the differences between these photos and the Country Living styled photos.

Most of the furniture and accessories are the home owners but seems that
Country Living simplified and of course took photos at the best angles.

Let's compare...

as styled by Country Living
The actual room. The home owner has wonderful things.
But Country Living simplified it.
The addition of the basket at the end of the bed is a real improvement.
Crisp white bedding makes for a very inviting bed.
That little metal table in the foreground got moved to be a bedside table.
I wonder if the homeowners kept the changes.
I would have!
This photo makes me realize I really like non matching bedside tables instead of matching.

I just love the whole look of this place.
I want to book a weekend to stay there...right now!

Have you been to Eureka Springs?
It's a little Victorian Village in the mountains of Arkansas.

I've been there and had a wonderful stay but it's been a long time.
I so want to go there again soon!

Open House Sunday

Victorian Cottage
in Sonoma, California
built 1875

This precious black and white victorian is full of quirky victorian details
with a modern sensibility.
See...quirky!
Huge clock...taxidermy peacock on a stick.
The peacock is gorgeous...but I could not live with any taxidermy.
I love how big the clock is. It came from a french train depot.
 Cute chairs.
We have some that exact shape at Pier 1.
They'd need to be recovered to look like these, however.
Sarah...the mistress of the home had the walls spray painted by an artist with
washes of creamy hued paint.
I like the variation in the color on the walls.
It slightly changes from room to room.
The 1940's stove came with the house.
She added the hood and the Heartland refrigerator.
The cabinets are painted with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Paris Gray.
Isn't this an interesting kitchen? Wish I had that stove...oh yes I do.
Lovely breakfast area.
Custom cut mirrors fill an antique window creating a fabulous floor to ceiling mirror.
Above the children's bed hangs a vintage Circus poster.
